West Pharmaceutical Services is one of three companies recognized as a 2016 ISPE Facility of the Year (FOYA) Honorable Mention Winner for their Kinston, NC Ready-to-Sterilize (RS) Expansion project in Kinston, NC, USA. West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc. (West) is a manufacturer of packaging components and delivery systems for injectable drugs and healthcare products that promote the efficiency, reliability and safety of the world’s pharmaceutical drug supply by working side by side of its customers from concept to patient. In response to customer demand, West identified the need for more manufacturing capacity for its RS product. The decision was made in 2011 to expand the RS capability to the Kinston, NC plant concurrent with ongoing operations. The West Kinston facility comprises over 200,000 square feet for the manufacture of a variety of rubber components that serve the injectable drug and healthcare markets and was selected for expansion due to its superior performance, facility and labor capacity, and proximity to key customers. The RS project was part of a multiple-phase expansion at the site, and consisted of several major features. An addition of 22,000 square feet was constructed to house all of the new processes and equipment. Major process equipment such as a vapor compression water-for-injection (WFI) system and pharmaceutical stopper washer were specified and installed. A process flow was developed to integrate RS into the existing facility and make allowance for future expansion for West’s Envision™ and Ready-to-Use (RU) processes.
The commendable efforts of the project team in design, project management and budget management have resulted in RS capacity in Kinston, ready for production in June of 2015 which provides superior customer transparency to the process, is modular to adapt to future expansion, and is aligned with cGMPs and regulations. ISPE congratulates West Pharmaceutical Services teams for their achievements and FOYA Honorable Mention win. Learn more about the West Pharmaceutical Services project.
