Pfizer Inc. is the 2019 ISPE Facility of the Year Category Winner for Facility Integration for their Pfizer Global Technology Center in Hangzhou, China.
Projects selected in this category exemplify the application of good design practices and superior conceptual planning which led to excellent integration of facility and process, yielding efficient, clean, pleasant environments promoting business advantages for staff and enterprise, encouraging excellent processing outcomes.
Pfizer, one of the world’s premier innovative biopharmaceutical companies, strives to set the standard for quality, safety and value in the discovery, development and manufacture of health care products. With a global portfolio including medicines, vaccines and many of the world’s best-known consumer health care products, Pfizer teams work across developed and emerging markets to advance wellness, prevention, treatments and cures that challenge the most feared diseases of our time.
In this project, Pfizer designed, constructed, qualified and delivered a $195MM Hangzhou China Global Biotechnology Campus that represents the culmination of an unprecedented construction schedule, efficient cost control measures, and an unmatched safety record in China.
In 2015, Pfizer decided to construct a state-of-the-art Greenfield Biotechnology Center in Hangzhou, China. This investment opportunity for a Multi-National Company (MNC) to compete in the underdeveloped biologics market in China was based on market potential, Pfizer’s understanding of Chinese policy, the business climate, and simple need. The project opportunity had many constraints, including local development and manufacturing, speed to the clinic, and lengthy periods of low plant utilization. However, Pfizer leadership aligned early on a strategy to launch an initial wave of products locally while addressing the business drivers and concerns.
The new Greenfield campus included State-of-the-art Drug Substance (DS) manufacturing facility using single use disposable technology, State-of-the-art Drug Product manufacturing facility, with an integrated lyo and isolator filling line, a High Bay Warehouse, Central Utility Building and Administration Building, including offices, laboratories and a cafeteria. The layout was designed to enable expansion for every unit operation and building, either together or independently. Implementation of advanced technology included an entirely single-use process for both bulk and sterile fill, the first 2,000 liter disposable bioreactors in production by an MNC in China, and the largest modular constructed Biotech Drug Substance Facility to date, with 77 modules shipped around the world. The application of this advanced technology enabled harmonization of the manufacturing platforms across four Pfizer manufacturing sites: Hangzhou, China, Grange Castle, Ireland; Andover, Massachusetts; and Sanford, North Carolina
This innovative facility is Pfizer’s first biotechnology center in Asia, ensuring the local production of high-quality, affordable biosimilar medicines for patients in China and throughout the world. This center will create more than 150 job opportunities and establish local biotechnology expertise that will help strengthen and promote innovation, as well as modernize China’s biopharmaceutical industry.
