ISPE’s Facility of the Year program has recognized West Pharmaceuticals’ facility in Kinston, NC with an honorable mention for their industry leading efforts to align primary components manufacturing process with current industry trends and standards.
Ed Hill, Program Manager with West Pharmaceuticals, and Ed Caulkins, Director of Facilities with DME, presented a case study on the design and delivery of this world-class facility.
As industry evolves there is the realization that components enabling the delivery of new as well as old molecular entities play a significant role preserving the integrity and efficacy of drugs.
Components such as vials, stoppers and syringes if not properly manufactured, processed, packaged and shipped have the potential to render pharmaceutical products adulterated or contaminated.
West Pharmaceutical Facility in Kinston, NC is a primary component supplier. The $15M expansion increased West Pharma’s ability to introduce new product capabilities and they also took upon themselves to upgrade its existing manufacturing area to align with industry trends as well as to meet drug manufacture’s and regulator’s requirements.
The scope of the project included cleanroom manufacturing areas, micro and QC laboratories, a WFI water room, gowning/locker areas, and expanded central plant utilities.
The facility expansion was designed with transparency and compliance in mind, floor to ceiling glass panels were incorporated in the design to allow viewing of production clean rooms from an exterior viewing corridor.
